Columbus City Council meets tonight to determine the fate of urban chickens.
July's meeting included nearly two hours of public comment before council members decided to table a decision that would ban homeowners from keeping chickens in residential areas.
Mayor Jim Lienhoop says the city has never had a way to limit chickens and hopes the new ordinance will be an effective way to do that.
"We already have chickens in Columbus, so we're not going to allow something that's not there today," Lienhoop says. "What we're talking about is trying to find a way to regulate something that is already there today."
Lienhoop says the new proposed amendment would allow six chickens with four square feet per chicken in a coop, four square feet per chicken in the run, ten foot setbacks from property lines and certification with the State of Indiana Department of Health.
The meeting is at 6 p.m. at City Hall.
