Flags on Indiana University's campus are flying at half-staff today in honor of two students who died last week.
Yaolin Wang was an international student who had just transferred to IU this semester. Bloomington police say she was murdered by her boyfriend, Chuanlin Xiao before Xiao hung himself. He was not an IU student.
Police found the body of another student, Joseph Smedley II, in Lake Griffy Friday night. His friends and family had reported him missing earlier in the week. The Monroe County coroner says it appears Smedley drowned.
IU President Michael A. McRobbie sent an e-mail to students and faculty about the deaths over the weekend saying, "Any time a student dies, the entire campus community is diminished, and to lose two students in a span of days multiplies our collective grief and sense of mourning. To the family and friends of Yaolin and Joseph, I extend our deepest sympathies on behalf of the entire Indiana University family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you in this time of unfathomable sorrow and loss."
IU is offering support for anyone distressed by the deaths and encourages on campus use of IU's Counseling and Psychological services.
