Brett Herbst is the founder of The Maize in Utah and works with about 270 farms across the country to design and create elaborate, themed corn mazes—including one at Beasley's Orchard & Gardens in Danville.
He says his team usually uses a grid system to mow the labyrinth. After designing the maze, he lays out flags in a grid-like pattern on the field and spray paints on the ground where cuts need to be made.
"It's kind of a simpler process, a little quicker and a little easier, and it allows us to be a little more mobile in our travels from farm to farm," Herbst said.
He said corn mazes are about more than just having fun, though—they can also teach kids about agriculture, and reinforce an important appreciation for the work farmers do.
"It just brings a lot of people out to the farm, and kinda reconnects them with some of their roots," Herbst said.
The Beasley corn maze this year is called Cornopolis, and includes a design of Monument Circle in Indianapolis.
