After 15 years of leadership, the dean of the Indiana University School of Education is retiring.
Dean Gerardo Gonzalez came to Indiana University in 2000 and as he leaves office he says he's worried about making sure Indiana's public schools have enough qualified teachers.
During his time as dean, Gonzalez says he saw many state policies implemented that have had negative effects on public schools.
"Frankly, because I'm dean of the School of Education at one of the largest institutions in the country, I had to take a leadership role in pointing out the flaws and the logic of those proposals," Gonzalez says.
Gonzalez says those include changes to the way teachers are licensed and low teacher pay—which he says could be turning students away from becoming teachers in Indiana.
Gonzalez plans to continue teaching at the School of Education after time off.
And in the State of the University address on Tuesday, Michael McRobbie said there will be a review of the School of Education before looking for the new dean.
