Indiana farm fatalities dropped in 2013 compared to the previous year, according to a Purdue University report released today.
The report shows there were 18 farm-related deaths in 2013, down from 26 in 2012.
Contributing to fewer fatalities are a decline in the number of Indiana residents who live and work on farms; advancements in the safety, durability and productivity of agricultural equipment and reduced dependency on youth labor.
The report indicates there has also been a continued decline in the number of farm fatalities involving people under the age of 21.
Only one person who died in 2013 was under 21 years old. It was a 15-year-old boy who died when a tractor overturned on him in Elkhart County.
