Indiana experienced an increase in workplace fatalities in 2013, according to the Indiana Department of Labor Occupational Fatality Census released Monday.
There were 123 deaths related to workplace related incidents last year—up from an all-time low of 115 in 2012.
While the number is an increase over last year's number, it represents a wider trend of decreasing worker deaths since an all-time high of 195 in 1994.
Department of Labor Spokesperson Chetrice Mosley says it's a trend the department is committed to maintaining.
"From a Department of Labor perspective is really stay committed to decreasing worker fatalities through outreach, training, safety consultations, recognition of businesses whom are exemplary in enforcing and being safe," Mosley says.
The Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries shows that about half of the deaths were transportation-related, and the majority of those incidents involved motorized vehicles on a roadway.
The second highest cause was "violence and other injuries by persons or animals."
The Indiana Labor Department began tracking workplace fatalities in 1992.
