IU Freshman Class Larger, More Diverse And Have Higher GPAs

Today is move-in day at Indiana University in Bloomington, and this year's freshman class has the highest average GPA in the school's history.

The average student has a GPA of 3.73.

IU also accepted more students this year than ever before, resulting in a freshman class of more than 7,700 students.

They're more diverse, too, with a 10 percent increase in Hispanic/Latino enrollment and a 7 percent increase in African American enrollment.

IU Vice Provost for Enrollment Management David Johnson says those numbers are the result of campus-wide efforts.

"We collaborate to recruit students, and we're just delighted with these numbers, it's just a great year," he says.

Taylor Brown is an incoming freshman from Atlanta. He said he chose IU for its highly-ranked Kelley School of Business, and he's excited to join in on the Welcome Week festivities.

"It's a good way to meet new people, a good way to get connected to the university, and to have a lot of fun," he says.

Classes start Monday at all IU campuses.
