Changes to Kokomo‘s smoke-free ordinance narrowly passed Monday night.
Council members voted 5-4 to pass amendments that would ban smoking in bars, taverns and social clubs, while also banning the use of e-cigarettes in all enclosed public establishments.
The ordinance still has a second reading next month, when it could become law.
As we've reported, anti-smoking advocates argue that banning smoking in prevents non-smokers from being exposed to secondhand smoke.
Many of the city's bar and tavern owners, on the other hand, say the ban would be detrimental to their business.
The state legislature passed a statewide smoking ban two years ago, but it made exceptions for bars, taverns and clubs.
It does not prohibit local governments like the city of Kokomo from passing stricter bans, however.
