Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana and Feeding America say the hunger issue in Indiana has hit crisis levels.
More than 260,000 Hoosiers, including 97,000 children in Central and Southeastern Indiana, receive emergency food each year through Gleaners. That's according to a joint report released this morning.
Gleaners CEO Cindy Hubert said that every month more than one-third of their clients must choose between food and other necessities like rent, utilities, and medical care.
"The problem is not going away," Hubert said. "Low wages, underemployment, unemployment – clients are making tough choices, and so food is very, very important."
The report says more than 1 million Hoosiers are at risk for hunger, and that 1 in 8 rely on Gleaners.
