The Indiana State Department of Health announced Wednesday it had awarded $127,000 worth of naloxone kits to the first responders working in rural areas throughout the state.
Targeting 95 agencies in 34 counties, the grant provides resources to communities who otherwise might not be able to afford naloxone. The funding will provide more than 3,330 kits, and training for the first responders who use them.
Naloxone, often referred to by its brand name, Narcan, is a non-narcotic that can reverse opioid overdoses.
The grants were made possible by a larger, four-year $3.2 million grant awarded to the state's health department in October 2017.
Counties receiving naloxone kits through the grant include Lawrence, Greene, Jackson and Jennings.
