An independent consultant is suggesting Brown County build a new justice center after reviewing how the county's historic courthouse operates.
DLZ presented their findings during a public meeting Wednesday evening in Nashville. The county's courthouse dates back to 1874 and has been remodeled periodically since.
But the firm says Brown County's court services are spread across multiple buildings, are not universally compliant for those with disabilities, and lack security measures. It suggests the county build a new facility, which could cost up to $7.2 million.
Diana Biddle is a Brown County Commissioner who heard the findings with the public for the first time. She says she avoided coming into the meeting with preconceived notions, but hopes whatever action is taken can alleviate problems those who work in the building face.
"We have one gentleman who meets clients at McDonalds," she says. "That's not an ideal situation for them."
DLZ plans to return to Brown County on June 4 to present a final feasibility study.
