The State Board of Education is considering whether it should get involved in reviewing virtual charter schools. These schools let students learn from home, but some people say they need to be held accountable for their performance.
Gov. Eric Holcomb called on lawmakers to get involved, due to increasing concerns about a lack of oversight for virtual charters.
But during the regular legislative session this year, measures to increase rules around virtual charters didn't go through. Now, it's an issue the State Board of Education could decide to take on.
The Board will vote at its meeting this week, whether to create a committee dedicated to various issues specific to virtual charter schools. It would focus largely on reviewing those schools, and considering any possible new rules around how they operate.
