The Secretary of State's office is ordering a Bloomington car dealership to immediately close its business.
The state issued a cease and desist letter today to H Auto. According to a press release, the dealership was selling cars without a license and illegally issuing them interim license plates.
The state launched its investigation in response to a number of consumer complaints. In some cases people purchased cars from the dealership but were never given the title.
The complaints say the dealership targeted Chinese students from Indiana University and advertised in both English and Chinese.
The Secretary of State's office and the Bloomington Police Department are continuing to investigate and urge anyone who thinks they might have been victimized to contact them.
In a statement, Secretary of State Connie Lawson said her office relies on consumers to help report scams.
"While our office routinely conducts audits of auto dealerships, the licensed dealers are overall fine and reputable," Lawson said in a statement. "It is the unlicensed dealers who are not following the law that are harder to track down."
