The first wave of IU students moving back on campus arrives August 9.
Mary Catherine Carmichael is the director of public engagement for the Office of the Mayor in Bloomington. Though classes haven’t started yet, she says off-campus parties already have been reported.
Carmichael says if you see a student gathering that exceeds Monroe County’s 50-person limit, you should call IUPD and provide an address. Over the summer, the Bloomington Police Department and IUPD found that students took university police involvement more seriously.
“They’ll gather names of those involved and those names are forwarded to the Dean of Students. The Dean of students, just like the provost, is taking this very seriously.”
Kirk White, assistant vice president for strategic partnerships at IU, says students will sign a Community Responsibility Agreement before returning to campus.If they don’t abide by university and local health orders, then IU is prepared to take disciplinary action, including dismissal.
White says prevention of COVID-19 spread is a community effort and it will take compliance from everyone associated with the university.
