The Indiana State Department of Health was reporting in July an average of less than 10 COVID-19 deaths a day. But Tuesday, Indiana recorded five times that.
The ISDH confirmed 2,951 new positive cases and 50 new deaths, increasing the state totals to 188,066 cases and 4,199 deaths. The state averages more than 3,000 cases and nearly 30 deaths every day — almost five times the number of cases and three times the number of deaths reported in July.
Indiana has administered 2,995,343 tests with an 8.4% seven-day positivity rate.
In Monroe County, the ISDH reported 35 new cases, bringing the county total to 3,618. The death toll remained at 40. The county has administered 128,975 tests on 53,570 individuals with a 2.8% seven-day positivity rate.
COVID-19 hospitalizations peaked Tuesday at 1,867, marking a 95% jump in Indiana’s COVID-19 patients during the past month.
Republican Gov. Eric Holcomb has resisted calls for reinstating coronavirus restrictions since lifting nearly all limits in late September, just as the state started recording sharp increases in hospitalizations, deaths and new infections.
Democratic governor candidate Woody Myers, a former state health commissioner, has said tougher restrictions needed to be reinstated in Indiana. He has also repeatedly called for a stronger mask mandate, as the one Holcomb has issued includes no penalties for violators.
