Results of the Nov. 3 election in Indiana, and across the country, may not be known for days. The counting of ballots continues after election night most years. This year’s expected surge in mailed ballots means election offices may need extra time to tally all the votes. As that occurs, some candidates may call for the counting to end and for themselves to be declared the winner. However, winners will be decided when all the votes are counted — that’s the American election system at work. WFIU/WTIU's journalists will cover that process, and WFIU/WTIU will rely on The Associated Press and NPR to call races for the winner based on the AP’s rigorous, time-tested method.
The Associated Press projects Republican incumbent Trey Hollingsworth will continue representing Indiana’s 9 th Congressional District, soundly defeating challengers Andy Ruff, a Democrat, and Libertarian Tonya Millis.
"I’m honored to serve a third term in the U.S. House of Representatives, working alongside Hoosiers every day to fight for certainty and prosperity during these uncertain times,” Hollingsworth wrote in a news release. “Since you first elected me, we have worked together to make sure our voices are heard in Washington, to support policies that put American families first, and to expand opportunities for Hoosiers to succeed. Now is not the time to back down from the fight for our values, and I look forward to working together for another two years."
This will be Hollingsworth’s third consecutive term in the U.S. House. He won the district’s open seat in 2016 after former representative and current Sen. Todd Young (R) ran for the U.S. Senate and won.
In an interview with WTIU/WFIU News last month, Hollingsworth said he was looking to continue the record economic growth that was occurring before the coronavirus pandemic took hold in March.
“We've been able to create a little over 10.5 million jobs; we lost 20 million since February,” he said in October. “So we're over halfway back. But for so many Hoosiers who are out of work, for so many Hoosiers that feel like their business is not where it needs to be – where it was – I want to make sure that we continue this robust economic recovery and get to those better outcomes as quickly as possible.”
Over the course of the campaign Ruff hammered Hollingsworth for being disconnected from the district and not a true Hoosier, calling Hollingsworth a “carpetbagger” in a campaign video and even writing a diss track about the representative: "The Ballad of ‘Tennessee Trey’ (Hollingsworth)." Hollingsworth moved to Jeffersonville in September 2015, a month before announcing he would run for the 9 th District seat in 2016.
During his previous two terms, Hollingsworth introduced two separate bills proposing term limits for members of Congress. He has said he will only serve four terms in the House of Representatives. He will start his third term in January.
