According to a recent survey, almost 40 percent of Americans said they have plans to travel during holidays this year.
Graham McKeen is Indiana University’s assistant director of public and environmental health. He says it makes sense that people are eager to see family during the winter holidays. But they should have a conversation with anyone they are seeing beforehand to establish expectations.
“I think those are just discussions families have to have individually. Upfront, talk about expectations," he says. "What is your risk acceptability? And what are the standards going to be when you’re around each other?”
McKeen adds that there are ways to alter your family gatherings to reduce risk.
The Centers for Disease Control suggests moving your gathering outdoors, opening windows in gathering rooms to increase ventilation, and bringing your own food to a gathering.
