Indiana continues setting COVID-19 records, while Monroe County documented more than 100 new cases.
The State Department of Health reported Thursday another record-high 6,654 cases and 51 deaths in the state, increasing Indiana totals to 230,965 cases and 4,563 deaths. The recent state averages of nearly 40 deaths a day is similar to the numbers reported in April and May.
Hospitalizations also increased for the tenth consecutive day to 2,569 — the most at any point during the pandemic and a 200% increase since Gov. Eric Holcomb lifted nearly all coronavirus-related restrictions in late September. COVID-19 patients now make up 31 percent of those in the state’s intensive care units — triple the percentage in September. About 22% of ICU beds are still available.
Indiana has administered 3.3 million tests with a 10.5 percent seven-day positivity rate.
In Monroe County, ISDH reported 109 new COVID-19 cases, increasing the county total to 4,141 cases. The death toll remained at 42. Monroe County has not reported more than 100 cases in a single day since mid-September.
The county reported 3,643 new tests, increasing its total to 145,249 tests administered on 56,120 individuals. Monroe County currently has a 5 percent seven-day positivity rate; when paired with its weekly case count, that could move the county into ISDH orange classification.
Monroe County has remained yellow likely because of mass testing at Indiana University.
