The Indiana average of daily COVID-19 deaths has quadrupled since summer.
The State Department of Health reported Friday 5,708 new positive cases and 50 new deaths, increasing state totals to 236,565 cases and 4,613 deaths. COVID-19 hospitalizations dropped slightly for the first time this month from 2,569 to 2,548. Almost 31% of ICU beds are occupied by COVID-19 patients, with 23.5% of ICU beds still available.
Hoosiers 60 years or older make up more than 92% of COVID-19 deaths, while accounting for only 23.2% of cases.
The state has administered 3.4 million tests on 1.8 million individuals with a seven-day positivity rate of 10.6%, which is the highest rate since early May.
Gov. Eric Holcomb announced Wednesday the state would impose new COVID-19 restrictions in counties failing to contain the virus.
In Monroe County, ISDH reported 59 new cases, increasing the county total to 4,199. The death toll remained at 42. The county has administered 146,201 tests with a seven-day positivity rate of 5.1%. This rising positivity rate threatens to push Monroe County out of the state’s yellow classification.
