Monroe County deputies arrested an armed man they say barricaded himself in his grandmother’s house.
Sheriff Brad Swain says deputies fired toward the suspect after he pointed a gun toward at them.
On Sunday Swain said deputies were pursing 33-year-old Dustin Galyan for an outstanding arrest warrant on violation of pretrial release from a narcotics possession charge.
EMS crews initially encountered Galyan as he lay unconscious in a yard on the 2300 block of Mt. Gilead Road, which is the home of his grandmother.
“My understanding that they were looking at as possible overdose situation,” said Swain.
Swain said Galyan resisted treatment from medics and ran into his grandmother’s home.
After deputies realized Galyan had an outstanding warrant, they tried persuading him to come out of the home.
Swain said while deputies were attempting to open the door to talk, Galyan left through the back door and had a gun in his hand.
He said deputies fired at Galyan but missed.
“He was taken into custody a few miles from the house where he had initially barricaded himself,” said Swain.
Swain added Galyan’s grandmother showed signs of physical abuse.
“She had no idea how that happened and initial speculation is she was attacked and knocked unconscious by her grandson,” said Swain.
Indiana State Police and the Bloomington Police Department assisted in the search and arrest of Galyan.
No one was seriously hurt during the incident, which remains under investigation.
