The Bloomington parks board heard recommendations this week to reopen the road that runs through Lower Cascades Park.
The .6 mile stretch has been closed to motorists for more than a year, as part of a pilot study to examine the effects of restricting the area to cyclists and motorists.

Adam Wason is the city’s public works director. He says the recommendation to reopen was driven by accessibility.
“We’d heard from a lot of folks that may have mobility challenges or are not regular users of bicycles and such that this closure really restricted access to the park for them.”
The road through the park was damaged during last Friday’s storm and that will need to be repaired first. Wason says, on an ambitious timeline, the road could be reopened by early September.
The city also plans to install speed-reducing features such as speed bumps and other recommended improvements.
