Canopy of Lights returns to Bloomington square

People ages 1 to 92 gathered in the courthouse square last Friday to celebrate the “Canopy of Lights,” a tradition that began 35 years ago but was put on hold last year due to the pandemic.

The celebration included band performances, singing and the famous lighting of the square.  Local shops stayed open later than most nights, and Christmas carols were sung for all to hear.  The event is sponsored by CFC Properties and company president Jim Murphy has seen first-hand the “magic” of this event throughout the years.

“I remember bringing my children to the ‘Canopy of Lights,’ and I would see their friends at that young age who are now parents that now bring their children,” Murphy said.

For some, this event has become a reset back into normal life after a year of seclusion.

“COVID was very isolating,” said Lisa Hanner-Robinson, a member of the Bloomington community. “We wanted to come [back] to the festivities and celebrate our town.”

Because the pandemic is ongoing, some of the traditional holiday events have been cancelled, such as the Mr. and Mrs. Claus meet and greet.  However, Murphy said he is glad the celebration is helping Bloomington get back into the holiday spirit.

“It warms your heart to see these families come down and just spend time together,” Murphy said.

The lights will be on in the square through the New Year and more holiday activities will be happening around Bloomington the rest of the month. For information about these events, go to visitbloomington.com.
