Monroe County enters orange advisory

COVID-19 rates in the state and Monroe County are beginning to tick upwards, according to the Department of Health’s dashboard. 

Monroe County entered the orange advisory level Wednesday indicating viral spread is increasing. The county had spent the last two months in the lower yellow advisory category. 

Sixty-two new COVID-19 cases were reported Wednesday after 43 on Tuesday. On Dec. 1, the county recorded 90 cases, which hadn’t happened since early January - about 11 months ago.

The seven-day positivity rate is up to 9.3 percent Wednesday and was 9.9 Tuesday. Last week on Tuesday the rate was just 6.5 percent.  

In District 8, which includes Monroe, Brown, and Bartholomew counties, hospitalizations jumped to 137 Wednesday. Hospitalizations haven’t been that high since Sept. 10.

Monroe County’s weekly cases per 100,000 are up to 279. Two weeks ago, the rate was 186 per 100,000. 

Statewide, more than 5,300 new cases were recorded Wednesday and the state has topped 1,140,000 since the pandemic began.

The Indiana Department of Health confirmed  80 COVID-19 deaths Wednesday, and the total since the pandemic began is 17,310. Hospitalizations were up to 2,755 Wednesday, more than 500 from the day before. Hospitalizations haven’t been as high since January. The state’s positivity rate is 14.8 percent.
