Monroe County remains in orange advisory, cases per 100,000 down to 260

Monroe County confirmed 54 COVID-19 cases Wednesday and 36 on Monday. The most cases confirmed in a day so far this month was 90 on December 1. 

The 7-day positivity rate was 8.5 percent on Wednesday up from 8.3 percent Tuesday. Last week, the 7-day rate was consistently above 9 percent. 

No new deaths were added to the county’s 223 total since the pandemic began.

In District 8, which includes Monroe, Brown, and Bartholomew counties, hospitalizations were up slightly to 142 on Wednesday from 141 on Tuesday. This is down from 147 on Sunday. But the last time hospitalizations were above 147 was Dec. 29, 2020, when they were at 151.

Last week’s average number of hospitalizations for the county was 137.8.

The county re-entered the orange advisory level last week and remained there. Its weekly cases per 100,000 were down to 260 from 279 last week.

Statewide, every county was back in either the orange or red advisory level­, indicating higher levels of spread.

The state confirmed 4,732 cases on Wednesday and 4,057 on Tuesday.

The Indiana Department of Health also confirmed 87 COVID-19 deaths Wednesday, and the total since the pandemic began rose to 17,649.

Hospitalizations were at 3,058, topping Tuesday’s high for the year. The state’s positivity rate was 14.1 percent, the same as Tuesday’s.

Long-Term Care 

The state recorded 262 new long-term care resident COVID-19 cases Wednesday, a significant drop from last week’s 564 resident cases. The state also reported 288 new staff COVID-19 cases Wednesday, another drop from the 412 reported the previous week.

Forty-three deaths were confirmed among long-term care residents this week. The week before, 55 resident deaths were confirmed. Three weeks ago, 18 deaths were counted.

One COVID-19 death was recorded this week among long term care facility staff. That total was 27.
