Dakota King gets another chance to find housing; to be temporarily released next week

Dakota King will get another shot at trying to find housing as part of his plea deal.

Monroe County Circuit Judge Valeri Haughton on Tuesday approved another temporary release for King, starting next week. King has been held in the Monroe County Jail for the last 902 days since he  allegedly admitted to killing his girlfriend’s baby after it threw up on him.

King  pleaded guilty last spring to felony neglect of a dependent. Under the plea agreement, he would be allowed to serve the rest of his sentence on home detention.

King doesn’t have a residence in Monroe County, though, so he was  released from jail  twice at the end of last year so he could find a place to live. The attempts were unsuccessful, so Monroe County Community Corrections suggested King try to find housing with private renters.

King will be released from jail the morning of Monday, Jan. 24 and is expected to turn himself back in at 8 a.m. Jan. 26. He’ll have to check in with Community Corrections at 2:30 p.m. each day he is out.

King's sentencing will be formalized next week if he is able to find housing.
