Bloomington residents frustrated by constant railroad crossing malfunctions

A broken railroad crossing arm that caused traffic jams at 10 th and the Bypass over the weekend appears to be fixed.

Several residents complained in the Facebook group called “Bloomington, IN – What’s Going On?” about the malfunction and other times railroad crossings have caused issues.

Jonathan Salvivar-Kitto, who lives between Bloomington and Bloomfield, says he does not think it should simply be the citizens’ job to notify those in charge of the malfunctions, and that, apart from the Indiana Rail Road Company, the city should also be responsible.

“That would seem to me to be a breakdown on city’s part, not because they have responsibility for the maintenance of it, but they have, certainly have responsibilities to the citizens of the city and people who are in city government have to be seeing postings like this,” he said.

Specific posts were made May 10 and May 15, with one saying the malfunction happened three or four days in a row.

Indiana Rail Road Company officials said the issue has been resolved but did not elaborate.

The Bloomington Planning and Transportation department said it did not have authority over the railroad and therefore would not be able to comment.
