City and campus power outage due to object contacting power lines

Parts of the campus and city are still without power at 9 p.m. Thursday.
Parts of the campus and city are still without power at 9 p.m. Thursday.

A good portion of the IU campus and parts of Bloomington lost power at 6 p.m. Thursday. IU students huddled outside campus buildings waiting to see if power would be restored.

At around 6:45 p.m. a voice yelled out from the IU Chemistry building that class was canceled.

Duke Energy is reporting the outage was caused by an object coming into contact with power lines. A map showed the area to be on South Rogers St. near Catalent.

IU sent out text message notices during the outage that dining services at Wright, Forest, McNutt, and Goodbody were closed.

IU strategic communications spokesperson Amanda Roach said in an e-mail campus back-up power came on as expected in all affected locations.

"In addition, our utility services team worked to switch power sources in order to restore full power while Duke remedied the issue," she said.

Roach says fire department response on campus was due to alarms being triggered when the power went out.

The Duke Energy website says power is estimated to be restored at 9:30 p.m.
