State prepping roads for storm

As the central and eastern portions of the U.S. brace for a snowstorm and extreme low temperatures, the Indiana Department of Transportation is preparing trucks, personnel and materials to clear motorways for Christmas travel this weekend.

Natalie Garrett, a spokesperson for the department, says it is closely monitoring next steps as weather conditions remain uncertain.

“We have been pretreating state roads and interstates as we're able,” Garrett said. “The rain on the front end of the storm has made that a bit of a challenge. We don't want too much of that material to be washed away by rain.”

National Weather Service forecasters say a flash freeze is likely Thursday night, with temperatures dropping more than 30 degrees during the transition from rain to snow.

The heaviest snow is expected later Thursday night.

❄️❄️ The first snow flakes have begun to fall here in the Southwest district. Crews all over are heading out. Remember to give plows plenty of room and if you can, stay home! Due to the combination of heavy snowfall, rain and high winds, plowing roadways will be challenging, Garrett noted. Those traveling have been advised to monitor conditions and only travel if necessary.

“We're encouraging people to pack an emergency kit, just in case an incident would occur that they would become stranded,” Garrett said. “So, pack things like extra blankets, extra clothes, snacks, water, phone charger, things like that just so you can be prepared.”

INDOT has a “Trafficwise” app where those interested can view reports regarding traffic incidents, winter road conditions, live traffic cameras, and active and planned construction. Those needing to travel can track live conditions of roadways through this app, Garrett notes.
