A Bloomington man died by suicide after threatening to kill several people and holding a person hostage Friday in a Bloomington home, police say.

The 46-year-old man shot himself after nearly 40 minutes of speaking with a crisis negotiator while holding a 76-year-old hostage at gunpoint, according to a Bloomington Police Department news release.

A juvenile and a sibling were also present but got out of the home before police arrived and called 911.

Officers encountered the man after receiving a report about 5:10 p.m. that he was armed, intoxicated and threatening to kill people in the 3300 block of North Kingsley Drive, according to police.

BPD’s Critical Incident Response Team, a task force that responds to crisis situations, arrived on the scene and contacted the man through FaceTime. Police said he was holding a gun while threatening to kill officers, the hostage and himself.

While speaking with a negotiator, the man refused to leave the home unarmed or release the hostage, police said. He shot himself about 6:31 p.m., at which point the hostage left the home.

The man's death was ruled a suicide by gunshot wound, according to the Monroe County Coroner's Office.

Police said the victims were not randomly targeted. Officials have not released additional details.
