IU enrollment slightly up from last year, growth in Bloomington

Enrollment numbers rose slightly this year at Indiana University, thanks to increases on the Bloomington campus.

A university releasedetailing its official census said 90,144 students enrolled this fall on all campuses. Enrollment has steadily fallen from 97,255 students in 2013, but this fall’s numbers are a slight improvement — 79 more students than last year.

In Bloomington, the campus saw record enrollment for the third year in a row with 47,527 students this fall.

The release states IU’s incoming undergrad class of 9,550 students is a 26 percent increase over the last decade. The number of all undergrads has increased 11 percent in the last 10 years, and the graduate program saw growth as well with more than 10,600 students enrolled this fall.

The number of “beginner” undergrad and graduate students — degree-seeking students with first-time enrollment at IU — is trending upward as well for Bloomington.

“To our incredible incoming class of almost 22,000 undergraduate and graduate students, welcome home,” President Pamela Whitten saidin a university-wide email Tuesday, referring to all campuses.

Regional campuses generally rebounded from lows last year, though IUPUI’s Indianapolis campus continues to lose students. However, graduate and professional student enrollment increased this year, the release stated.

Diversity is increasing across all campuses, with domestic students of color enrolled at IU campuses increasing about 5 percent. People of color make up roughly 32 percent of the student body on all campuses.  IU Bloomington, IUPUI, IU South Bend, IU Northwest, IU East and IU Kokomo set campus records in this field, the release said.

“Across our campuses and through our online programs, we’ve welcomed an incredible new class of students that is among the most diverse in IU history,” Whitten said in the release. “As a new year begins, our focus centers on providing an unmatched student experience that equips all of our students for lifelong success in the classroom, in their careers, and in communities across our state and nation.”
