Halloween could mark first snow this year

Trick-or-treaters may want to add an extra layer to their costumes tonight.
Trick-or-treaters may want to add an extra layer to their costumes tonight.

Much of Indiana could see a snowy Halloween as the National Weather Service predicts a 20 percent chance of a snow shower before 9 tonight.

Temperatures this evening are expected to dip below freezing with a low of 26 degrees, following the first freeze Monday night. This year’s freeze is a few days behind, as it tends to be around Oct. 26.

The snow chance notice is in effect for all of south-central Indiana. However, it is unlikely Bloomington will see any substantial snowfall.

This will be one of the colder Halloweens. Bloomington Halloween temperatures average a 61-degree high and a 39-degree low.

Around 5 p.m., the temperature will be below 40 degrees, dipping to near-freezing from 8 to 9 tonight.

Kacie Fuson, meteorologist with the Indianapolis branch of the National Weather Service, said trick-or-treaters should be mindful of the below-average temperatures as they go out tonight.

“You'll definitely want to bundle up with those costumes and while trick-or-treating,” Fuson said.

Daily high temperatures are expected to get back up to mid-50 by Friday, which is closer to an early November average.
