The National Weather Service said all of central Indiana is in for an arctic outbreak over the weekend, bringing temperatures to near or below zero Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

“We've been really above normal this entire winter. This is our first big cold air outbreak,” Cody Moore, meteorologist for NWS Indianapolis, said. “So just make sure you have your preparedness plans ready, and you're dressing appropriately for these types of conditions.”

The Monroe County Emergency Management Agency is opening warming stations at fire stations, starting Saturday. The stations will be open through Jan. 20.

The stations will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. Residents can stop by to warm up. Food, water, sleeping areas or showers will not be available.

A storm system is expected to pass through Friday and Saturday. The storm will bring about two inches of rain, which may turn into snow Saturday. There will also be strong wind gusts, potentially up to 50 mph Friday.
