Jeff Hall has filed to run for Monroe County coroner this year.
Hall, a Democrat and current chief deputy coroner, said he is running because he understands the responsibilities of the role and the department itself through prior experience.
“Continued education to the public about the roles and responsibilities of a coroner is something I am very passionate about,” Hall wrote in an email to WFIU/WTIU News. “Providing more public education will hopefully change the stigma of the public's view as a coroner. Having open discussion sessions quarterly is a way that I plan on achieving this goal.”

Hall has served as chief deputy coroner for about seven years. Before that, he was a deputy coroner for about six months. He also worked as a paramedic for seven years.
Hall is also the co-founder of Switchyard Brewing Company, according to his LinkedIn profile.
“I am very familiar with the coroner's position and what all the coroner does,” Hall wrote. “I have a great working relationship with my current co-workers and (…) I have a great working relationship with the local police, fire and EMS departments within Monroe County.”

The coroner is primarily responsible for identifying deceased persons, investigating and determining their cause and manner of death, and notifying their next of kin.
Hall is the only candidate for coroner. Current coroner Joani Stalcup, who was first elected in 2016 and is serving her second term, is not seeking reelection.
In 2022, Stalcup ran unsuccessfully for Monroe County Sheriff, losing to fellow Democrat Ruben Marté.
