Two Hoosier National Forest trails close after June storm

Fallen trees and debris on the Peninsula Trail in the Charles C. Deam Wilderness and the Pate Hollow Trail forced closure.
Fallen trees and debris on the Peninsula Trail in the Charles C. Deam Wilderness and the Pate Hollow Trail forced closure.

Two trails in Hoosier National Forest remain closed due to damage from the June 25 storm, the U.S. Forest Service said in a press release Friday.

Fallen trees and debris on the Peninsula Trail in the Charles C. Deam Wilderness and the Pate Hollow Trail forced closure. Neither trail will reopen until at least the fall, but the Peninsula Trail could take longer.

“The Pate Hollow Trail is currently being cleared, but the amount of damage is extensive and it could take several months to complete,” according to the Forest Service.

Campsites 12 and 21 in the Deam Wilderness also closed due to storm damage. The Forest Service said visitors should avoid the areas around these trails and campsites.

CORRECTION:  A previous version of this story said the Pate Hollow Trail could take longer to reopen. This was incorrect. The current version has been updated to say the Peninsula Trail.
