A federal district court in Indiana has denied an attempt to prevent the execution of Joseph Corcoran early next Wednesday morning.
The ruling rejected defense attorneys’ arguments that Corcoran is incompetent to be executed due to his mental illness. Corcoran suffers from paranoid schizophrenia.

“We are appealing to the 7th Circuit,” attorney Joanna Green wrote in an email.
The ruling also denied a request to postpone the execution.
A separate federal lawsuit over Corcoran’s right to a spiritual advisor has been settled.
Indiana hasn’t had an execution in 15 years. Corcoran’s is to take place early Wednesday morning at the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City.
