Bloomington insurrectionist to drop asylum claim in Canada

A former Bloomington resident and IU alumnus will soon return to the U.S., after President Trump gave him and over 1,500 other people a pardon for their roles in the capitol insurrection.

Antony Vo was sentenced to nine months in prison for trespassing at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. Instead of reporting to prison in June, he fled north where he claimed asylum in Canada.

Vo’s lawyer Oluwadamilola Asuni said that his client plans to drop that claim now that he’s been pardoned.

“He has not dropped it yet, but, since (that) fear has been vacated, he will most likely drop it, and then he would return to the U.S.,” he said.

The Canada Border Services Agency arrested Vo earlier this month and said there was no record of him entering the country.

Asuni said that he spoke with Vo shortly after learning that he was pardoned.

“He was so happy,” he said. “It was expected anyways. But, you know, politicians sometimes can take some other factors into consideration after getting into power, and they might change their promises. So, we were not certain.”
