Vaccine might be on the way as another Hoosier farm is hit with bird flu

A commercial duck farm in Elkhart is the latest operation to be infected with bird flu.

The Indiana State Board of Animal Health announced late on Tuesday that a flock of just over four thousand birds have been infected and are under quarantine. A control area of six miles has been established and includes portions of Elkhart and LaGrange counties.

This is the first time bird flu has infected a flock in Elkhart County since 2022.

But farmers and state boards may be getting a new tool to help combat the spread of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza.

In a press release, global animal health company Zoetis announced that it received conditional approval from the USDA for a vaccine it developed for bird flu.

The company noted a conditional license can generally be used to address an emergency or special circumstance and is issued for a set period of time. The USDA will still have to approve its larger use before farmers can give it to their flocks.

Nearly seven million commercial birds have been infected in Indiana since January.
