Memorial Stadium is getting a fresh playing surface as Indiana University Athletics replaces the football field’s turf ahead of the 2025 season.

The $1.1 million project began shortly after commencement and is expected to be completed by July 27—just in time for fall football camp. It is funded through IU Athletics’ fiscal year 2026 budget.

The new turf, installed by Hellas—a Texas-based company—is designed to improve both safety and playability. It features a shock pad beneath the synthetic grass, helping the surface mimic the feel of natural grass while reducing the risk of common athletic injuries such as ACL and Achilles tears.

Hellas also recently installed similar turf in IU’s Mellencamp Pavilion indoor facility.

IU Associate Athletic Director for Facilities Davis Bolsteins said the upgrade is necessary.

“Over the last season, we just saw some normal wear and tear in areas that were beyond repair,” Bolsteins said. “It’s just time to introduce a new playing surface.”

IU and Nebraska, which will also use Hellas turf at its football stadium, are the first Big Ten schools to use the product. Hellas has a strong presence across college athletics and professional sports, having installed turf in NFL stadiums such as the Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium and the Las Vegas Raiders’ Allegiant Stadium.
“They’ve got a large footprint, especially in the SEC and Big 12,” Bolsteins said. “Now they’re starting to grow in Indiana, even at the K-12 level.”

Hellas is recycling the old materials, and IU has donated portions of the previous turf to the Owen Valley Sports Complex. The rubber infill used in the new field is made largely from recycled car tires.

“In some ways, the project is unintentionally sustainable,” Bolsteins said.

When the Hoosiers return to the field this fall, fans may notice subtle design updates. The end zones will now feature Indiana’s signature “Hoosier Bold” lettering, though the overall color scheme and layout of the field will stay the same.
