The FDA announced Thursday that the import of papayas will be halted until it is proven they are not contaminated with salmonella.
A three-month investigation found that 15 percent of papayas imported from Mexico were contaminated with bacteria, the FDA said.
An outbreak of salmonella Agona infections sickened 100 across 23 states earlier this year.
U.S. and Mexican officials are working together to prevent the spread of foodborne bacteria, Mexican public health official Enrique Sanchez Cruz said.
