'Let's Move!' Initiative Celebrates Three Years

Happy Birthday, Let's Move!

Today, First Lady Michelle Obama begins a two day national tour to commemorate the third anniversary of her healthy eating initiative, Let's Move!

According to the White House, Mrs. Obama will be appearing with Rachel Ray in Mississippi today "to highlight the new healthy school lunches that are now being served across the nation." Tomorrow she will be in Chicago for an event called "Bringing Physical Activity Back to Schools."

She was also recently featured in two videos with Big Bird from Sesame Street --  one encouraging kids to choose healthy snacks like fruits and veggies, and the other promoting different kinds of physical activities.

Struggles Along The Way

Let's Move! is dedicated to solving the challenge of childhood obesity within a generation.

Perhaps the biggest accomplishment for the initiative was the passage of the  Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010.

Late last year, however, the USDA responded to complaints that the new regulations were leaving students hungry at school and put undue burden on local school districts. As a result, there is now more flexibility with regards to grains and meat in school meals.
