“Now, I love food! Let the people know–let the people in the back know--I, hey, I love food. I plan vacations around the top food spots. So, I love food. But I just don’t enjoy cooking”

This week on the show we hear the story about a local business, Popcorn Kernels with a Twist. We speak with the owner, Virginia Githiri, about what motivates her to run her own food business--since she doesn’t really like to cook.

Fred Bennet mixes up the caramel, cooks it on the stove, pours it over the popcorn, and then it heads to the oven. It gets mixed, tossed and returned to the oven several times before the right texture is achieved.

Virginia Githiri always knew she wanted to run her own business. She has a fulfilling career as a professor in the School of Public Health at Indiana University, but for her, having a side business runs in the family.

Her popcorn business had a few false starts, but eventually everything clicked and you can find her shop on the corner of 4th and College in downtown Bloomington (where the hobby shop used to be). They also have an online store and they do fundraisers with groups.

Hear the story of how Dr. Githiri found her way into a food business in spite of the fact that she doesn’t like to cook. We also talk about how she manages her work/life balance and what matters most to her as a small business owner.
