Indiana State University announced Friday it will memoralize slain Washington Post journalist and alumnus Jamal Khashoggi by creating an annual address in his honor.
The Jamal Khashoggi Annual Address on Journalism and the Media will focus on the First Amendment, freedom of the press, and issues critical to journalism. ISU says speakers will include journalists, authors, filmmakers and photojournalists. The first address will be this spring.
"Jamal Khashoggi cannot be forgotten," says ISU Spokesperson Libby Roerig. "And, as a university, we value journalism as a foundation for our democracy."
Khashoggi attended ISU from 1977 to 1982 and has a business administration degree from the university.
He was a vocal critic of the Saudi government and was assassinated in October after visiting the Saudi embassy in Turkey. He went there to get paperwork necessary to get married.
Khashoggi was one of the journalists named as Time magazine's Person of the Year in 2018. He's the only ISU alum to receive the honor.
