Indianapolis Children's Museum Plans To Demolish Nearby Buildings

The Children's Museum of Indianapolis is planning the demolition of a nearby 1920s apartment building and a former office building that it owns.

Museum officials say they looked to save the eight-story apartment building along Meridian Street but that it would need several million dollars in renovations because of its deteriorated condition. Residents were moved out of the building in 2016 after a property management firm withdrew.

The office building facing demolition is the Salvation Army's former Indiana divisional headquarters.

Museum leaders say the building sites will be used for additional parking while they consider future options for the land.

The museum north of downtown Indianapolis is among the city's top attractions, drawing about 1.2 million visitors a year.
