Highway Expansion Study Launched In South-Central Indiana

The Mid-States Corridor Regional Development Authority is launching a two year long Environmental Impact Study (EIS) into the possibility of expanding Highway 231 between the Kentucky border north to Crane, where it intersects with I-69.

But other smaller highways may also be considered for expansion.

Mark Toy heard the presentation at Washington High School Monday night. He’s worried about how potential road work would affect his car repair shop in Montgomery.

“I’ve got 7 full time employees that work in that building and one part-time employee. So my question is what will they do for a small business if they severely impact the traffic that can get to me?”

Mid-States Spokesperson Mindy Peterson says the project could boost economic development for the area.

“When you have improved highway connections and you are able to move not only people but goods faster and hopefully safer, you’re talking about increased opportunities for the region,” says Peterson.

Peterson says a final decision on any road expansion for this project will be made after all public comments have been taken.

Two more public hearings are planned this week: Tuesday at Springs Valley High School in French Lick, and Thursday at Jasper High School.

Both meetings run from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and features an open house format.
