The Monroe County Solid Waste District may have to start paying fees to their service provider for hauling away recyclable materials.
Republic Services told district officials they would start charging $26.40 for every ton of recyclable material sent to them for sorting and processing due to the current recycling markets.
Tom McGlasson Jr. is the executive director of the Monroe County Solid Waste Management District. He says the current three-year agreement expires at the end of the year.
“Republic and other waste management companies have been implementing fees for the collection and the process of recycling for the past year or so,” he says.
McGlasson says the district picks up about 225 tons of recyclables a month. The new charge would amount to about $73,000 a year. He hopes the district would absorb that cost without having to charge residents, which could discourage them from recycling.
The City of Bloomington already pays the cost.
