Monroe County Humane Association Breaks Ground On New Campus

The Monroe County Humane Association is celebrating the groundbreaking of what it’s calling its Animal Care Campus.

It will be located on Fieldstone Boulevard on the west side of Bloomington.

The campus will include a 4,000-square-foot veterinary care clinic and a 2,000-square-foot emergency housing center.

The Humane Association raised nearly one million dollars to fund the center.

Rebecca Warren, Humane Association executive director, says the new space will help the humane association meet a growing need for services and resources.

"We’re trying to do surgery, dental and grooming and general wellness care out of a 1200 square foot facility and we’re elbow to elbow," she says.

Warren says in 2018 the center saw 1,200 animals. She says they've already surpassed that number this year.

"This year we’ve already seen 1,300," Warren says. "There’s no shortage of animals that need things from us and the demand continues to be there and exceed what we can offer in our current space."

Phase one of the project -- which includes a full service clinic, grooming center, food and supply pantry, as well as a pet memorial garden and pet trail -- is slated to be complete in January 2020.

The next phase, which is for emergency housing, will be done in March.

There are plans to eventually do a third phase. It would include a space for hands-on learning and veterinary workshops.
