Fall semester classes at Indiana University-Bloomington don’t start until Monday, Aug. 26, but students are already returning to town.

Students living in the Smallwood apartments leased by IU to deal with displacement due to this year’s mold renovations started checking in Aug. 12.

Aug. 20 and 21 are the official move-in days for students living in undergraduate residence halls.

Bloomington Public Works Director Adam Wason says move-in week is always a challenging time for traffic management.

He says ongoing construction projects could snarl things even further.

“The bypass will be a major pinch point for folks,” Wason says.

Starting this week, traffic on State Road 45/46 near I-69 will shift entirely to the newly-constructed westbound lanes and on-and off-ramps to I-69 on the south side of 45/46 will close.

The southern exit ramps will reopen to accommodate move-in traffic Aug. 16 through Aug. 26.

Among other challenges, Wason says, are drivers who double-park and block entire lanes of traffic to unload.

He advises that people who wish to stay away from heavy move-in week traffic avoid Third Street, Atwater Avenue, Tenth Street and Seventeenth Street.
