2014 Legislative Session Begins Today

The winter storm postponed Monday‘s scheduled start of the General Assembly, but legislators intend to begin the session on Tuesday.

The House and Senate plan to put off the opening gavel till 3:30 p.m., two hours later than normal. That‘ll give legislators from around the state extra time to reach Indianapolis.

President Pro Tem David Long, R-Fort Wayne, says the Senate will also extend Friday‘s scheduled deadline for filing bills to Monday. That was already the deadline in the House.

Long says it‘s possible legislators could extend their normal four-day week through a Friday or two this month to make sure they stay on schedule.

And state offices are reopening at 10 a.m. But Governor Mike Pence says his office is telling state employees that if they are under a travel advisory, they should follow that advisory. He says employees will be accommodated on an agency-by-agency basis.
