Expanded Lifeline Law Gives Students More Protection

As Indiana University students celebrate their return to campus this weekend, they'll have some extra protection if something goes wrong.

Earlier this year, legislators expanded the state's Lifeline Law.

It now provides immunity to underage people who seek help for any type of medical emergency.

It also protects the person in need of help.

Senator Jim Merritt authored the bill and says he wanted to remove any hurdles that might make students hesitate to call 911.

"For one silly evening, one stupid evening, could end your life or ruin your life," Merritt said. "And, I believe that we need to give the tools to people to save lives."

Merritt says he's heard of at least seven lives that have been saved since the Lifeline Law went into effect in 2012.
