Number Of Homeless Children In Indianapolis Grows

The number of homeless children in Indianapolis has grown by about 17 percent, according to figures from the Coalition for Homelessness Intervention and Prevention of Indianapolis.

Christy Shepard, the group's executive director says their latest count shows 354 homeless kids in Indianapolis.

That's up from 309 homeless children in 2013.

Homeless children include those who are either living in shelters, unstable housing situations or on city streets.

A recent U.S. Department of Education report also shows a record breaking number of homeless students nationwide.

Figures show an 8 percent nationwide increase in homeless students during the 2012-2013 school year. That amounts to a record high 1.25 million homeless kids across the nation.
